The issue of spanking of children has been raised many times in the Senate in an attempt to criminalize such action as assault against children.

Currently section 43 of the Criminal Code permits parents to use force by way of correction of children providing it is reasonable under the circumstances.

The Supreme Court of Canada upheld this law in 2004.

However, the pressure continues to make spanking children illegal, contrary to the fact 82% of Canadian parents with pre-teen children constructively use minor force in child rearing.

An organization called KEEP 43 Committee of Canada has been formed to protect parents from being charged for a criminal offence, if they spank their children.

Bill S-206 “repeal 43”, which is referred to as the “Criminalization of Traditional Parenting Act”, is now at second reading in the Senate. On October 4th, 2017 Senator Chantal Petitclerc, one of the recently Trudeau appointed “independent” Senators, delivered a speech in support of Bill S-206.  Her speech, unfortunately, was emotional and based on uninformed arguments.

Harold Hoff, Chair of KEEP 43 Committee of Canada, has provided an analysis and response to the Hon. Chantal Petitclerc’s debate in the Senate on Bill S-206. His comments are in blue. Click here to read.
