August 12, 2026
A by-election is an excellent opportunity to pass a referendum of approval/disapproval on the government of the day. Canadians are fortunate that on August 31, 2026, their fellow citizens in the ridings of North Vancouver—Capilano (BC), Beaches—East York (ON) and Chicoutimi—Le Fjord (QC) will have the opportunity to do so.
Of course, each riding is unique with its own history of local politics and issues. And while it is true that to a large extent, all politics are local, when it comes to federal ridings, local politics take on a national dimension.
We are fast approaching the year and a half mark (although it seems longer!) of Mark Carney’s leadership as Prime Minister—more than enough time to judge whether or not the Liberals deserve to be awarded additional seats—seats legitimately won through election rather than through backroom-deal floor crossings that have occurred recently.
Do the Liberals Deserve More Seats?
So far, judged in economic and/or policy terms, the Carney/Liberal performance has been dismal to disastrous. Carney certainly has given a lot of speeches and travels a lot, but that has been mostly theatrical performances and photo ops lacking any substantial accomplishments. There is no trade deal with our largest trading partner, the U.S. Instead, Carney has mismanaged and deepened already hostile relations with the U.S. There is no renewal or sense of purpose with respect to the defence of Canada and North America. Instead, Canada has joined the European Broadcasting Union making Canada eligible to enter the Eurovision Song Contest. To Carney this helps make Canadians more European than North American.
The Liberals’ Surveillance of Canadians
While the dog and pony show has been going on, the Liberal legislative agenda has largely been focused on creating a surveillance state infrastructure enabling social control and the suppression of fundamental freedoms, e.g., speech and religion, with the passage of Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act, Bill C-18, the Online News Act, Bill C-8, the Cybersecurity Act, Bill C-9 the Combatting Hate Act, and Bill C-22 the Lawful Access Act.
The creation of the surveillance state continues with the introduction in June of Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act, which is nothing more than a scheme to facilitate centralized government-issued digital ID and justification for the creation of a new, massive bureaucracy called the “Digital Safety Commission”, invested with immense powers to regulate social media and the internet. Among the new Commission’s powers is its cabinet-like ability to create regulations without Parliamentary approval as well as its ability to ignore any rules of evidence that normally apply to administrative and/or judicial proceedings. This highly constitutionally flawed and totalitarian surveillance regime is “sold” to the Canadian public on the basis that it is needed to “protect children from social media and from pornography.” This evaluation is a cover-up to allow the federal government to acquire a database on Canadians. At this point, one has to wonder what happened to parental responsibility? Is the Criminal Code still in effect? In case you’ve missed it, the Criminal Code already contains provisions protecting children and adults from online child pornography, violence, and other online criminal activity. Why aren’t these laws being enforced? Why the need for a new bureaucracy to do what the law already covers? What’s the real end game?
Foreign Investments Flee Canada
Despite Carney’s supposed financial acumen, he and his Liberals have done little to nothing to attract investment back to Canada, which since 2015 has seen over $1 trillion in capital investment leave Canada. This number matters because it shows that Canadians themselves, whether individuals, companies, or pension funds, have no faith in investing in Canada. It is a shocking indictment of Canadians’ lack of confidence in the country’s political class, its poor competitiveness, and the over-regulation and regulatory hurdles that obstruct capital projects.
Carney’s Questionable National Loyalty
Even within the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney’s abilities are suspect. What was he thinking when he created the position of “Chief Operating Officer” for the PMO and appointed an American Democratic political operative, Maia Johnson, to the position? Carney already has a Chief of Staff in the person of Marc-André Blanchard. So, what will the COO do? As Ms. Johnson appears to be continuing in her role as advisor on U.S.-Canada relations, we’re not sure about the propriety of an unelected American running the PMO. Carney’s pretence that Canada has an “elbows up” policy against the U.S. is in reality, meaningless. Conflict of interest and security concerns are HUGE red flags that seem to have been all but ignored in Johnson’s appointment. It is also a sad comment on the availability of Canadian talent that Carney could not find a Canadian for the position.
Extravagance by Carney
Notwithstanding these failures, Carney and his Liberal cronies manage to live the life of ease, jetting all over the world at taxpayers’ expense and enjoying exotic inflight catering and other amenities, usually reserved for rock stars and celebrities.
Carney spent nearly $1 million on airplane food catering during his first year as prime minister in 2025. In one trip alone in November 2025, Carney spent $160,000 on airline food for himself and his excessively large 55-member entourage. Did Carney need such a large number of people to manage his luggage? He certainly did not need them to provide him with advice since he never listens to anyone else anyway. Each member of that entourage cost the taxpayer $2,850 each for food alone, not including accommodation and other expenses.
To put Carney’s extravagance in perspective, the one trip in November 2025 cost the taxpayer more money than the average family of four spends on groceries in a decade. This money is spent at a time when Stats Canada reports that in 2024, 11% of the population is living in poverty, and one in four families is having difficulty paying for the cost of food. These families include 2.5 million children.
Foreign Interference
Nothing has been done to secure elections from foreign interference, despite continued warnings from Canada’s security agencies. Instead, China has been rewarded with closer ties to Canada with RCMP/Chinese law enforcement “partnership” and the importation of Chinese EVs into the Canadian market, despite security risks and damage to Canada’s struggling auto sector.
The list of Carney/Liberal failures is long and a national embarrassment but has been covered up by the Liberal government’s paid media. The fact that the Liberals have a majority government is due not to the ballot box, but because of the betrayal of five Conservative members who, bribed by Liberal operators, crossed the floor and joined the Liberals in 2025/2026.
By-elections Matter!
Voters in BC, Ontario and Quebec have a rare opportunity to vote in by-elections this month and send a clear message to Carney and the Liberals that they lack trust in the Party and its leader. If you have family or friends in any of these by-election ridings, let them know what is going on in the background with the Liberal government, and encourage them to vote in the by-election. Whether enough will turn out to vote has yet to been seen. However, given that by-elections lack the same intensity of voter attention, one does not have cause for optimism.
Still, we encourage voters to turn out and vote strategically, if necessary, to deny the Liberals additional seats. It’s time to give Carney and the Liberals a real taste of “elbows up”!
