This is Part I of a two-part series on the Liberal Leadership contest. There are two leading candidates in the Liberal leadership race: former Minister of Finance / Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and former Governor of the Bank of Canada / Bank of England Mark Carney.
Part I will focus on Chrystia Freeland and Part II on Mark Carney. It is important to examine these two Liberal leadership candidates through a pro-life / family lens as the vision they bring to the Liberal Party will determine whether that Party has learned from its past mistakes or will simply move forward as Trudeau 2.0.
At the outset, it must be acknowledged that both Freeland and Carney share certain common values reflected by their close association with the globalist World Economic Forum (WEF). Both Freeland and Carney were board members of the WEF and have served as spokesmen and panellists during WEF meetings. Another candidate in the leadership race, although not considered likely to win, MP Karina Gould (Burlington, ON) former Liberal House Leader (2023 – 2025) and cabinet member, had been designated by the WEF as a “Young Future Global Leader” in 2020. It cannot be a coincidence that three of the candidates for the leadership are associated with the WEF, and this certainly raises legitimate questions regarding the good faith of their policy positions and agenda.
Freeland the Supporter of Justin Trudeau
When Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Prime Minister on January 6, 2025, a reporter asked him about his relationship with Freeland. Trudeau responded: “Chrystia has been by my side for close to 10 years now. She has been an incredible political partner through just about everything we have done, as a government and a party over the past decade.” This appears to be an accurate description of their relationship. Since leaving the world of journalism and being elected to the House of Commons in 2015, Freeland has been a faithful foot-soldier in Trudeau’s cabinet, being made Minister of International Trade in 2015, Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2017, Deputy Prime Minister in 2019 and finally Minister of Finance in 2020. During her tenure at Finance, Freeland never objected to Trudeau’s wild extravagance, such as granting $6,496,076 to support ‘Pride’ ideology in 2023 and an average of $4,182,746 per year for the previous three years all on ‘Pride’ ideology—and these sums do not include the millions and millions spent on all things LGBTQ, but only include ‘pride’ events as in parades, festivals, etc.
Trudeau’s every decision and action has been fully supported by Freeland as a member of his cabinet up until December 13, 2024, when he advised her that he was dismissing her as Finance Minister. On December 16th, Freeland very publicly announced her resignation as Finance Minister on social media by posting her resignation letter. For the first time since the government took power in 2015, Freeland found the voice to publicly criticize Trudeau’s policies with respect to relations with the United States and Trudeau’s scheme to send $250 cheques to working Canadians who earned $150,000 or less in 2023, which she referred to as a “costly political gimmick.”
Freeland the Authoritarian
Trudeau and Freeland share many characteristics including the fact that they are both authoritarians as exemplified by the harsh treatment in 2021 of the Freedom Convoy participants. Freeland fully supported Trudeau’s illegal imposition of the Emergencies Act, and she illegally froze the bank accounts of the participants in the Convoy. Trudeau and Freeland’s treatment of Freedom Convoy leader Tamara Lich serves as a cautionary tale for anyone who disagrees with their decisions. The presumption of innocence was all but ignored and Trudeau’s government used the criminal process as part of the punishment. They ordered that Ms Lich be thrown into jail, wear ankle bracelets when she appeared in court and subjected her to an extensive trial lasting over many months. The court decision on Ms Lich is expected to be released in March.
Nowhere is Trudeau and Freeland’s behaviour more in sync and offensive than in their appalling abuse of the pro-life movement. They facilitated huge grants of taxpayer’s money to pro-abortion organizations and abortion clinics both in Canada and abroad. Government programs, such as the Summer Jobs Program were made available only to those who supported abortion. It is scandalous that eligibility to receive taxpayer funding included the criterion that the recipient’s beliefs must conform to that of the government’s pro-death / anti-life ideology.
Moreover, Pregnancy Care Centres were persecuted by Trudeau and Freeland when they attempted to eliminate them by removing their tax-exempt charitable status with increased reporting requirements that were vague and liable to be abused.
Freeland the Misleader
Freeland is now desperately attempting to separate herself from Trudeau by announcing that she no longer supports the carbon tax, or the capital gains tax, the latter of which was included in her April 2024 budget. These policies, according to Freeland were presented to Canadians as being “absolutely necessary” for the economy. Who can believe her now? Freeland is also presenting herself as a tough negotiator regarding U.S. President Donald Trump, claiming that Mr. Trump is “afraid of her”. Mr. Trump has had long experience in dealing with arrogant, self-important individuals such as Freeland, and Freeland’s boast is laughable and without any credibility.
As exemplified by her past actions and support for Trudeau’s agenda, Freeland is obviously contemptuous and disrespectful of Canadian voters’ concerns and experiences. When questioned about the impact of inflation on families, Freeland replied that her family had economised by cancelling Disney Plus cable. She had no knowledge or understanding of families that were lining up at the foodbanks to obtain enough to eat. Freeland is not a promising candidate from a pro-life / family perspective.
Summary
If Chrystia Freeland has proven anything these past ten years, it is that she is a faithful and enthusiastic proponent of the politics, policies, and attitudes that have brought untold hardships on Canada, Canadians and their families. Freeland’s fingerprints are all over the failures of files that Trudeau and the Liberal government have handled. This is not speculation or political spin; it is objective fact. Under Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland, every file that has come across the government’s desk has been handled in such a way as to be an abject failure. From both a social and economic perspective, Freeland is not a viable solution for either Canada or Canadian families.
Our next Update will consider the candidacy of Mark Carney.
