The MAiD amendment to the Criminal Code which permits a physician to kill a patient by a lethal injection rather than providing medical treatment, came into effect in 2016.  In the first year this change was permitted, there were 1,018 deaths by MAiD.  Each year since then the number of MAiD deaths has increased astronomically.  In 2023, the most recent statistics available, indicate that there were 15,343 MAiD deaths – a staggering 1,407% increase in deaths per year.  Montreal physician, Dr. Romana Coelho has stated,

“It’s quicker to get MAiD than specialist care. A MAiD team will pay house calls within 24 hours, while doctors’ house calls are extremely rare with many on long waiting lists for treatment.”

The amendment to the Criminal Code was portrayed to the Canadian public as resulting in a dignified, peaceful, serene death to end suffering.  This was a deliberate lie used as propaganda to encourage the use of MAiD as a compassionate and acceptable solution to suffering.  This lie has led to euthanasia becoming a commonly used treatment, not just for medical reasons, but also to replace social services required by the homeless, the poor, the disabled, the frail aged.  It has become a cost/benefit advantage for the government.

The true facts about MAiD are finally being exposed.  Medical evidence from other jurisdictions show that MAiD can be a painful death, akin to drowning or the torture called waterboarding.  The injection used in MAiD includes a paralyzing drug called propofol which prevents the patient from making any movement or showing any facial expressions, so that anyone observing the patient is not aware of any of the suffering being experienced by the patient.  Complications of MAiD also include, a lingering death, seizures, asphyxiation, waking up after the injections as well as other complications.  Studies indicate that these complications occur in one out of three cases.

The organization that pushed this horror on Canadians, Dying with Dignity, is still not satisfied by the high number of MAiD deaths and is further pushing the envelope for MAiD to be permitted for mature minors (children), those under 18 years of age who can provide their own consent to death regardless of their parents’ wishes.

Further, a carefully selected government Committee chosen by Justin Trudeau, called the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying”, issued a report on February 2, 2023.  This report recommended death by MAiD not only for mature minors but also for the mentally ill who would not be able to provide a valid consent because of their Alzheimer’s, Schizophrenia, severe depression, etc.  This Committee also recommended that Advance Notice of Consent for MAiD be permitted by perfectly healthy individuals, to receive MAiD at a later time should they become incapacitated – even though they may not want to end their lives at that later date.  The Liberal government has already approved the inclusion of mental illness in the MAiD legislation which is to come into effect on March 17, 2027.

The new Liberal Prime Minister, Mark Carney, a former financier and banker, is fixated on Canada’s current economic stagnation and will regard the reduction in health services and social services created by MAiD as a benefit. Simply put, the efficient and quick killing off of people rather than providing the medical treatment and needed social services will be regarded as advantageous for the economy.

There is no question, however, that this MAiD madness must be stopped.  Below is a Resolution on MAiD passed by REAL Women at its Annual General Meeting held on May 24, 2025.  This Resolution provides more details about MAiD in Canada that may be helpful to you.  Carney and his cabinet must be advised that the Canadian public is repulsed by any further expansion of MAiD and further, that the amendment permitting MAiD in the Criminal code must be repealed.

RESOLUTION

2025

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Must Be Repealed

Whereas in 2016, Canada amended the Criminal Code to permit a physician to kill his patient by lethal injection, instead of providing medical treatment to that patient; and

Whereas this amendment to the Criminal Code was based on false information and propaganda that incorrectly portray death by MAiD as a peaceful, painless, dignified death without complications; and

Whereas medical evidence from other jurisdictions has indicated that death by lethal injection occurring in one out of three cases causes a painful death by the lungs filling with fluid, creating in the patient a sensation of drowning similar to the torture method of water boarding.  It also can cause other complications including a lingering death, seizures, regaining of consciousness and other problems; and

Whereas witnesses to a death by lethal injection cannot perceive the patient’s suffering because every lethal injection by MAiD includes a paralyzing drug which prevents the patient from movement and facial expressions to indicate the suffering that is being experienced; and

Whereas no autopsy of the 60,301 patients who have died by MAiD in Canada has been carried out so that the complications to the lethal injection cannot be uncovered; and

Whereas MAiD is used in Canada for cost/benefit purposes to end the lives of the homeless, the disabled, the aged and other vulnerable individuals, instead of providing them with the required social services; and

Whereas on March 27, 2025, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities published a report on the MAiD situation in Canada recommending that the Canadian government implement comprehensive measures to provide health and wellbeing services for the vulnerable, instead of terminating their lives by the MAiD regime.

BE IT RESOLVED that the provisions made in the Criminal Code to permit MAiD be repealed and that those suffering at the end of life be provided instead with high quality palliative care in order that they live out their final days experiencing compassionate care.
