WHEREAS the adoption of children is a privilege not a right;
AND WHEREAS the adoption of children should be based solely on the criteria of the best interests of the child;
AND WHEREAS current research has overwhelmingly affirmed that infants and young children thrive best emotionally, physically, mentally, academically and spiritually in the traditional family setting;
AND WHEREAS there are long waiting lists across Canada of stable, traditionally married couples who wish to adopt children;
BE IT RESOLVED that Real Women of Canada requests that provincial governments affirm or if necessary, pass legislation, specifically requiring that adoption of children be restricted to legally married heterosexual (husband ad wife) couples or to individuals bonded to the child by way of blood or marriage.
