Supporters of abortion were ecstatic with the development of the abortion pill (sometimes referred to as a chemical abortion). At last, they exclaimed, a woman could have an abortion in the privacy of her own home without having it prescribed by a physician. The abortion pill, instead, could be obtained either directly from an abortion clinic (no questions asked) or by mail. Pro-abortion activists believed the abortion issue had now been settled in their favour.
The abortion industry, naturally, insisted that the pill could be used safely. The US Federal Drug Administration (FDA), under pressure from then President Bill Clinton, had authorized the use of the abortion pill in 2000. But it was to be subject to restrictions, such as it being prescribed by a physician after consultation and a later confirmation that no fetal parts or tissue remained. These restrictions were removed under President Joe Biden in December 2022, permitting abortion pills to be sent through the mail. On January 2023, the FDA permitted pharmacists to prescribe the pill. The politicized US Department of Justice (DOJ) which has become a tool of the Biden government, obligingly concluded that the abortion pills could be legally sent in the mail even to those states that have banned abortions.
Canada wasn’t far behind the US in that it made the pill available in 2017, and permitted it to be sent through the mail.
The abortion industry was particularly pleased that the use of the abortion pill could be obtained by mail, as this eliminated the problem of pro-life picketers, as well as the problem created in the US by the overturning of Roe vs Wade in June 2022, that resulted, already, in 14 states banning abortion (with more states to follow). Women in these states could access abortion anyway by way of the abortion pill by mail.
Black Market Abortion Pills
An online, chemical abortion black market, often from abroad, quickly flourished although it has put women’s lives in jeopardy. The drugs received by mail may not be what they claim to be and, according to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, “ninety percent” of online pharmacies are illegitimate.
How the Abortion Pill Works
Using abortion pills is a two-step process. The woman first takes the drug Mifepristone, which starves her unborn child of nutrients. Then, 24-48 hours later, the woman takes the drug Misoprostol, which causes contractions to expel the dead or dying baby, usually privately at home.
In taking drugs received by mail, a woman has no real knowledge about the process, the risks, or the safety of the drugs. She is told only that they are safe and effective. Risks include hemorrhages, retained fetal parts, septic shock, infection, muscle weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, and vaginal discharge, to name a few of the problems that can develop. Women are not advised of these complications. Moreover, women taking the abortion pill are never informed about the intense pain and bleeding that occurs with a chemical abortion.
Factual Evidence of Abortion Pill Harms
The mainstream media and health officials are failing to disclose the serious consequences that may occur from taking the abortion pill. But information about the pill has, nevertheless, leaked out. For example, UK data obtained under the British Access to Information Act, has indicated that 911 ambulance calls have jumped 64% between 2019 and 2020 since the legal use of the abortion pill and there are increasing reports of coercion and abuse of women.
In the US, the FDA has linked abortion pill deaths to at least 26 women. It was disclosed in July 2022, that a 19 year old girl in Canada died from septic shock after taking the abortion pill. Many of the complications are due to the fact that the abortion drugs should be used within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, but without a medical examination or an ultrasound, the gestation period can remain uncertain and risks increase as gestation increases.
In a study, in 2021, the US Charlotte Lozier Institute found that the rate of abortion-related emergency room visits by women taking the abortion pill increased more than 500 percent between 2002 and 2015. Another study in 2009, “Immediate Complications after Medical Compared with Surgical Termination of Pregnancy”, published in the medical journal, “Obstetrics and Gynecology”, found a complication rate of approximately 20 percent for the abortion drugs, compared to 5.6 percent for surgical abortions. It reported that hemorrhages and incomplete abortions were among the most common complications.
The Research Journal Institute (Sage Journal) reported in an online study dated November 9th, 2021 that between 1999 to 2015, abortion related hospital visits increased by 14.6%.
It is ironic that it was argued, in the early days of the abortion debate, that abortion should be made legal so that women would be prevented from going to dangerous “back alley” abortionists. However “back alley” abortions are now occurring to thousands of women, alone at home, without medical supervision or proper after-care. Alarmingly half of the abortions in the US are by the abortion pill
The strategy of abortion advocates, to by-pass abortion restrictions by using the abortion pill, continues to cause serious harm and even deaths for thousands of women. The advocates, however, are determined to normalize the abortion pill as a regular, common and expected treatment for an unplanned pregnancy, the same as any other medical treatment. They want the abortion pill to be purchased and consumed as commonly as an aspirin. However aspirins do not take a human life, nor risk the health and life of a woman who swallows it.
Abortion advocates are stymied by the fact that expelling a healthy developing baby in the womb is not a natural act, but is a destructive intrusion on the human body that may cause catastrophic consequences. In this regard, according to medical authorities, the abortion pill is a powerful anti-hormone that not only prevents a woman from continuing her pregnancy, but also affects a woman’s entire body, with long term consequences to the brain and other parts of the body.
Advocates insist however, on preventing consequences of the pill from becoming common knowledge. As a result, women are being used as tools for their nefarious purposes including tremendous financial gain.
